October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month
Cybersecurity is essential in today’s digital world because it protects your personal and business data from hackers, scams, and online threats. With so much of our information stored and shared online, from banking, shopping, emails, and private documents, strong cybersecurity helps prevent identity theft, financial loss, and widespread data breaches. Cybersecurity starts with you. Stay alert, stay protected, and help keep your digital world safe!
Here are some simple but powerful tips to protect yourself

The first tip is to turn on 2FA (Two-Factor Authentication). Passwords can be stolen, guessed, or leaked in data breaches (which major companies and social media sites are falling victim to). 2FA adds an extra layer of protection by requiring a second form of verification, such as:
- A code sent to your phone number or generated by an authenticator app
- A fingerprint or Face ID scan
- A hardware security key
Even if someone gets your password, they can’t access your account without that second factor.
Other important tips
- Use Strong, Unique Passwords: Avoid reusing passwords. Use a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols, or better yet, a password manager, to create and store them securely.
- Keep Software Updated: Regularly update your operating system, apps, and antivirus software to patch security vulnerabilities (see ads below).
- Use Secure Wi-Fi: Avoid public Wi-Fi for sensitive activities like banking. Or use your phone’s Personal Hot Spot for a secure, private WiFi connection. If needed, use a VPN (Virtual Private Network).
- Think Before You Click: Be cautious of links or attachments in emails and texts, especially from unknown senders.
- Get a password Handbook: Ideally, one with alphabetical tabs for easy organization. For each account, record your login, password, and the date you last updated it. Store the handbook in a secure location, and make sure your spouse, partner, or trusted family member knows where it’s kept in case of emergency.

More Important Tips
- Back Up Your Data – Regularly back up important files to an external hard drive or secure cloud service.
- Lock Your Devices – Use PINs, passwords, or fingerprint/Face ID on all your devices.
- Beware of Social Engineering – Scammers often pretend to be trusted contacts or companies. Always verify before sharing personal info.
- Review Privacy Settings – Check your social media and app privacy settings to control what you share publicly.
- Stay Informed – Cyber threats evolve constantly—keep learning about new scams and security best practices.
- Phishing – A hacker might trick you into giving up your password via email, website, text, or phone calls (Apple, Google, etc, don’t call you).

Final thoughts…
I take cybersecurity seriously—not just because it’s part of my profession, but because it’s essential for my own personal security. You’ve probably heard me talk (and yes, rant) about the importance of digital safety, backups, and protecting your data—whether by email, text, phone, or in person. That’s why I’ve put together an ongoing list of resources and tips for you. If you ever have questions, concerns, or need help with anything on the list (or beyond), don’t hesitate to reach out.

Stay aware and stay vigilant.
